Live Music Performance EXTERNAL CORE UNIT

Brief:

Your school is hosting a showcase for parents and governors. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.

Your work: Must be suitable for the audience
If you work as a group each candidate in the group must be able to show their contribution. Each candidate will be assessed individually.

TASK 1 Planning

My statement of personal aims:

Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:

I would like to improve my technical skills on the drums and also improve my confidence with performing. My other goal is to be able to perform for an extended amount of time as I usually only play one song at a time and need to perform for 10 - 15 minutes and want to achieve at least a merit. I would also like to be able to perform my set with the confidence that what i'm doing sounds right so I want to make sure that I play my parts accurately.

I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals:
I can use my current ability on the drums (I am able to play basic beats with mostly good accuracy) and the fact that I am quite calm under pressure to achieve my goals.

I will know if I’ve achieved it because……
I will know if i have achieved my goals because i will have good feedback that meets the merit criteria at least and i will just know if i have improved my confidence by how I feel on stage and after the performance.
The pieces will be accurate and I will get good feedback from the audience if I play with good rhythm and timing.

How I will meet the expectations of the audience:
I will meet the expectations of the audience because I will make sure that my set is at least 10 minutes.

I am doing an older song - Gorillaz (2001) so I expect that the parents will recognise this one. All of my songs are appropriate for the audience as they do not have the vocal part playing because it does contain some swear words.

Plan of my contribution to the performance

The requirements of the brief and how I will meet them:

The brief is to do a performance in front of parents and governors and it must be between 10-15 minutes. My performance has to be appropriate for the audience and I have just explained how my performance will be appropriate.

    What I intend to do:
I intend to perform on the drums, I will play the following songs Gorillaz - clint eastwood, Cypress Hill- hits from the bong, rage against the machine - bulls on parade (in that order).

    How I will do it:
I will make sure that my technique is good enough by practicing at home and coming and practicing at lunch. I will record myself every 2 weeks to see if i have made progress or not and keep a weekly blog so I can make sure I cover everything in time for the event. I will ask other people to listen to me regularly so that I can get audience opinion and know how to improve.

Who I will need to involve:
I will need my drum teacher to be involved to help me improve my technique and maybe my friend to sing in one of the songs, I am not sure if I want to play solo yet, it might sound better if I add another musician. I will need a sound crew on the day to record and to help me make sure I can listen to the tracks on a device while I play.

    The resources I will need:
A drum kit and 3 backing tracks without the drums playing. I might also need a microphone near to the drums so i can introduce my songs if I cannot be heard. I will need the drum kit set up in advance.

The time needed for each song/ activity:
I will need to have my drum lesson with Mr phillips first and then go and practice by myself each week and on the day I perform. I will be having a dress rehearsal run through so that I can evaluate my performance and iron out any mistakes before the final thing. I will need 15 minutes to record everything.

The health and safety issues for rehearsals and the performances:
I could damage my ears playing the drums loudly so i will wear ear buds or headphones to prevent this. The sound crew will have to be careful with the sound levels so that its not uncomfortable for the audience and do a sound check before hand. The sound crew also need to be careful with the cables so no one trips over them. I will check the stage before my performance to see that all of this has been done.

My set list:
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood

Cypres Hill - Hits from the bong

Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade

I believe that this is appropriate for my performance because the 3 songs I am doing are from 3 different music genres so there's something for everyone.

Style and Image:
I do not have a specific style or image for my event I would just like to give people a taste of my music. However, as I am performing to parents and governors I will need to be professional and wear my uniform and introduce myself and my music.

Ideas for the performance:
I will make sure it all goes smooth by speaking to the technicians before hand and telling them what backing tracks I need.
I will make sure that the event goes as well as it can by being very well rehearsed.

Staging and equipment needs:
I need a drum kit because that is the instrument I play, this is all i need because its the only instrument i will be using, I will have this centrally placed on stage as I am the performer and need to be the focus. I will also need ear buds to protect my ears, i can get the ear buds myself. If I do decide to add any other performers I will speak to the sound team about the equipment that they need.

Rehearsal Schedule

Own preparation time (I will be practising my music with my instrumental teacher in weekly 30 minute sessions totalling 2.5 hours)

Rehearsal 1: 23rd March CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME (1 hour)
Plan: practice bulls on parade and get the intro up to speed

Reality: i achieved this in the lesson and can now play up to speed.

Rehearsal 2: 30th March CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME (1 hour)
Plan: practice bulls on parade and get the first fill finished

Reality: Practiced bulls on parade and completed the first fill and ran through the whole thing so that I have fully remembered the intro.

EASTER HOLIDAYS (Own preparation time - 7.5 hours)

Practice recording

I will add some fills to this one, i will also use the better drum kit because the one is was using sounds awful.

i think that this  piece is consistant but quite boring i will add some fills. i think that if i add more fills the piece will have more to it and will be more interesting.

Rehearsal 3: 20th April CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME (1 hour)
Plan: practice bulls on parade and get the chorus learnt

Reality: Practiced bulls on parade and learned the chorus.I played it to my friend and they commented that the timing was good but that it sounded a bit slow which I agree with and will work on next time.

Rehearsal 4: 27th April (ARD COMPLETE 2 HOURS OF REHEARSAL IN MUSIC) CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME
Plan: practice bulls on parade and get the chorus up to speed

Reality: practiced bulls on parade on got the speed correct. I played it again to my teacher who said the timing was much better.

Rehearsal 5: 3rd May CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME DRESS REHEARSAL PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE (2 hour)
Plan:practice bulls on parade and get all the fills finished. Run through all of my set before recording it on stage to make sure that it is all smooth.

Reality: The performance was okay but when i listened back, I thought it sounded a bit empty without any other players. So I have decided to include Bass in my performance as it sounds too empty without it so I have asked Mr Flowers to play for Clint Eastwood and Bulls on Parade. This will mean that the audience will be able to follow the song better. We have not practiced together so will need to do this before the final performance.

Rehearsal 6: 4th May CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME (2 hours)
Plan: Rehearse with Mr Flowers - work out what bass part to put in with the drums

Reality: Worked out what Mr Flowers would play and how it would fit with my drum parts

Rehearsal 7: 9th May CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME (1 hours)
Plan: Run through my whole set so that I know I can get through it all and check the timing of it.

Reality: Had to go through it a couple of times to check that it was accurate as I made some mistakes

Rehearsal 8: 10th May CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT TIME - REHEARSAL PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE (2 hour)
Plan: Run through my set first with my drum teacher and then with Mr Flowers to check it is polished.

Reality: See my performance evaluation below.

TASK 2 – THE PERFORMANCE

Performers External Assessment Task 3 (MAY 2017)

FINAL LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCE:

Performers External Assessment Task 3 (MAY 2017)
TASK 3 FINAL Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:

I played for over 10 minutes which is what I set out to do and I played each of my pieces, Mr Flowers played the bass very well and we both played in time.

I played my pieces properly without making many mistakes in most of my songs. My rhythms were overall accurate.

Improvement Reflection:

I would like to have found clean versions of my songs which also had no drums in them so that the audience could have heard all of the other parts. This was a disadvantage on my performance because I had to play with no backing tracks as the lyrics to 3 of my songs contained inappropriate lyrics. I would have liked to be more accurate throughout the last song, i kept changing speeds and needed a steady tempo and pulse throughout.

Improvement #1: find clean versions of my songs that also had the drumming taken out.
Strategy: I could improve this by being more prepared and perhaps making my own version of the song using music software getting friends who I know are able to to take the drum beat out of my chosen tracks.

Improvement #2: improve the accuracy of my overall tempo and pulse.
Strategy: Practice with a metronome, keeping in time with this as I play. How could you make that improvement?

Improvement #3: Be less repetitive with what I play
Strategy: By choosing more complicated songs with more fills and changes so it would be a bit more interesting for the audience. I would need to work on becoming a better drummer in order to play more difficult pieces.

Feedback from others:

Jamie said "Good drumming, rhythm and confidence". He also said "did not address the audience well, songs had the same tempo/beat. Was hard to hear the song names".

Maddie said "it would have been good if you could have made eye contact with Mr Flowers and shown good communication on stage. Sometimes the music seemed to drag.

How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance?

It made me look at my performance as an audience member rather than the performer. It told me how important the timing, rhythm and tempo are in a performance.

I hadn't thought about communication before but this might have helped my overall tempo and pulse to be smoother if I had been looking at Mr Flowers too.

Conclusion:

I played 3 songs for my performance, the songs were:

1. Bulls on parade by rage against the machine
2. cypress hill - hits from the bong
3. Gorillaz - clint eastwood

My performance as a whole went better than i expected. i didn't mess up at the beginning of any of my songs which i thought i would. I also believe that i played my songs well but would have liked to have kept a good tempo rather than speeding up and slowing down definitely in my last song. Mr flowers helped me out by playing the bass, it made my performance a lot more interesting and in the future I would like to play with other musicians and work on developing my communication and skills with playing with others.
